Karsten Moran is a New York City-based photographer. He has been a regular contributor to the New York Times for more than a decade, covering everything from the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy and the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012 to pandemic dining, the US Open, and the Met Gala.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Mr. Moran grew up in Africa, the American Southeast, and Indonesia. He earned his bachelor's degree in Environmental Science and Visual Arts from Bowdoin College and has worked for publications including Fortune Magazine, Newsweek, ProPublica, The Southern Poverty Law Center, The Marshall Project, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. His work has been recognized by American Photography, Communication Arts, the NPPA's Best of Photojournalism Contest, and the Society of Professional Journalists, among others.
He lives in upper Manhattan with his daughter, and his wife, the journalist Beth Kowitt.
His work is represented by Redux Pictures in the United States, REA in France, Laif in Germany, and eyevine in the United Kingdom.
